How to choose a surf school

A practical checklist for comparing courses without relying on a star rating alone.

Planning guide · Sources checked 30 September 2026

Before you book

Ask who teaches the lesson, what qualifications and insurance arrangements apply, and how many students each instructor supervises. Check whether your language preference is available for the actual session, not just at reception.

During the lesson

Ask how groups are matched by ability and how the day’s conditions are assessed. Clarify what support is available in the water. A thoughtful answer should explain a process, rather than describe a particular beach as permanently suitable for beginners.

When plans change

Get the cancellation, postponement and refund terms in writing. Distinguish weather-related changes from a cancellation by the traveller. Ask what happens when a course has started but a later day cannot go ahead.

Compare the total experience

Record the course price, water time, transfers, equipment and group size side by side. Avoid choosing purely on an hourly headline price when the inclusions are different.
